Telematics Transforms Mineral Transport in Odisha
Overview
Mining operations around the world face common challenges, including mineral theft, inefficient fleet monitoring and limited visibility during material transportation. To address these issues, the Government of Odisha, one of India’s leading mining states, mandated the use of Vehicle Tracking Systems (VTS) for mineral transportation vehicles.
The initiative aimed to:
- Prevent mineral theft during transit
- Improve transparency across mining operations
- Enable real-time tracking from mine to destination
- Ensure compliance with approved routes and transportation schedules
This large-scale implementation demonstrates how intelligent telematics can help governments and mining operators improve operational control, regulatory compliance, and resource protection.
The Challenge
Before implementing Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), mining operations faced several challenges that are common across mining regions worldwide:
- Theft and loss of minerals during transit
- Lack of visibility from loading to unloading points
- Manual data collection, which was slow, unreliable, and often manipulated
- Tampering of tracking devices and SIM cards, resulting in interrupted monitoring
These issues led to financial losses, reduced operational transparency and difficulties in maintaining regulatory compliance.
Our Solution
To solve these problems, iTriangle Telematics deployed two advanced devices:
- AIS 140 Certified Bharat101 Plus 4G
- AIS 140 Certified Bharat101 with IRNSS
These devices were designed specifically for mining and included:
